While drunk drivers are dangerous to other citizens on the road, other stories of the truly unusual drunk driving incidents have included some strange characters. While we have no doubt that our own local officers in Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale, AZ have seen their fair share of the unusual, we’ve taken a look at some of the strangest stories of DUI charges from around the world.
This past week it came to light that a man in Scotland received a DUI charge while riding a bouncy ball down a highway in Dundee. He was clearly on the road, heading for a tunnel when officers flagged him down.
In Noosa, Australia, a man was spotted driving on a motorized beer cooler powered by a 50cc engine. He was also intoxicated, and was arrested for DUI and for driving without a license.
A stubborn man riding a lawnmower in Blountville, TN took officers on a low-speed goose chase. He was clearly intoxicated, swerving between lanes and ignoring the police and their sirens. When the officers pulled him, over and administered a field sobriety test, they noticed he had an unopened can of beer in his pocket. And to add even more strangeness to this story, another man in Athens, TN was arrested for also riding a lawnmower the very same week.
An Oxford, OH student was pulled over for driving the wrong way down a one-way street. When officers approached, they noticed the young man was dressed in a breathalyzer costume and had an open can of beer in the cup holder. The young man was found to have fake IDs on him, and was so charged with underage drinking and a DUI.
We’ve all seen those electric toy cars that small children can ride in, but it’s disconcerting to see a man trying to do the same. In Essex, England a 40-year-old man was caught driving such a children’s car near his home and was arrested for drunk driving. These toy cars can have a maximum speed of 4 mph, which is slower than a mobility scooter.
A young man in Portland, ME was caught drunk driving with a Zamboni in a community civic center after he’d crashed it into a wall. A Zamboni is the vehicle they use to smooth down an ice rink. Apparently, he had tried to operate a few forklifts prior to his joyride with the Zamboni.
Similar to our lawnmower stories, a man in Ohio welded a bar stool to a lawnmower engine, and drove the makeshift vehicle until he crashed it going 20 mph. After being charged, he later confessed that he’d had around 15 beers.
This particular incident involves three people from South Canterbury, New Zealand. The night began at 12:15 a.m. when a 15-year-old was arrested for drunk driving. After being taken to the local police station, he called his mother to come meet him. On the way, the mother was also pulled over and charged with drunk driving at around 2:14 a.m. With both mother and son at the station, the mother called her partner to pick them up and he was subsequently arrested and charged with drunk driving as well. By 3 a.m. all three had been charged on the same night with DUIs.
