According to recent studies, car accident deaths spike during the spring break period. This means that for areas that see a lot of spring break traffic, they will also usually see significant increases in traffic accidents, infractions and deaths. In fact, recent studies of fatal crash rates in popular spring break destinations across the Nation showed that the weekly death toll from car accidents in those areas goes up by nearly 10 percent during spring break. Some of the more popular cities and their trends were studies during the spring including Miami, San Diego, Lake Tahoe and New Orleans.
Many of the cities studied have a long history of partying during spring school holidays. However, interestingly enough, researchers did not find a link between alcohol use and the higher number of crashes. One would think that increased alcohol use and abuse would be one of the top reasons for accidents during spring break. However, the research suggests otherwise.
One of the researchers suggested that part of the reason for the increases is more distracted driving during spring break. Evidently there is much more texting, all night-partying, fatigue, multiple passengers and other distractions for drivers during spring break.
It all raises the question about how dangerous spring break is. Most people come back safe and sound from their spring break adventures, but some do not after tragic and unfortunately circumstances.
So if your teen or someone you love is about to head out of town, or even to the next town over for spring break festivities, be sure to remind them that distracted driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving.
1) Limit the number of passengers in your vehicle.
2) Never use your phone or text while driving. Studies show that even a moment of inattention can be enough to case a deadly accident.
3) Always have a designated driver or the number of a taxi company programed into your phone.
4) Always have a back-up plan in case you designated driver is unavailable.
5) Avoid driving late at night, in poor conditions or when any alcohol is involved.
